Year 2

Autumn 1 - 2017

Welcome back!

Welcome to Year 2

We hope you and your children have had a lovely holiday. We are delighted to be welcoming your children into Year 2 and hope that they feel excited about the year ahead.

Unit of Learning

To begin the term the whole school will be focussing their learning around the piece of music, Rhapsody in Blue. The children will be producing some fantastic art, writing, music and dance learning around the music. Later on in the term, we will be looking at our topic of Heroes and Villains. The children will be using the story ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ to explore the characteristics of heroes and villains. We will also look at the achievements of famous heroes both now and in history such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and Mo Farrah. In Science we will be looking closely at materials and their characteristics as well as designing a cape for a hero using our knowledge of the most suitable materials to use. We will also be looking at Hinduism in RE and celebrating within the school community.

Home Learning

We recognise the importance of learning at home and our Home Learning Journal enables children, parents and teachers to communicate regularly. We will also be asking the children to contribute to the home learning journals, making comments about stories, character profiles, and reviews. One of the most important ways to help your child is to read with them and listen to them read. We cannot stress enough the importance of regular reading. We recommend that children read with an adult every evening for about twenty minutes. We would also suggest that you encourage your child to apply their reading skills in everyday situations. Please ensure that your child brings their book bag to school every day.

Uniform and P.E. kit

Sweatshirts are available to buy from the office and children should wear black or grey trousers or skirts. Please label all items of clothing with your child’s name and support us by ensuring that your child does not wear jewelry, nail varnish or short skirts. Boys should not have any patterns shaved into their hair.  For P.E children should wear black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, white t-shirts and trainers/plimsols.

Year 2 will have P.E twice a week. The class teacher will inform you of these dates early in the ter.

We look forward to meeting you. Please feel free to come in to talk to us after school any day!

Thank you – Year 2 Team

To learn more about our sporting hero, Laura (Trott) Kenny, we visited the Lee Valley Velopark. We saw the very track where she won her two gold medals at the London 2012 Olympics. We were very fortunate to see cyclists on the track. One even rode very high up on the steep corner to high five some children!
