Year 6

Autumn 1 - 2018

Welcome Back.

We hope you and your children have had a lovely summer break and that you are looking forward to the start of the academic year. This year our Year Six team will consist of Miss Walters, Miss Staines and Mr Holliday. We are all very excited about the year ahead, the topics which we will teach and getting to know our classes. We are sure that your children will continue to demonstrate a positive and curious attitude towards their learning. Please remember, if you have any questions or suggestions, don’t hesitate to talk to us after school. We look forward to meeting you all!

Unit of Learning: Growing and Changing

‘Increasing the awareness of self-development helps us make decisions that can affect our future.'

This half term our unit of learning will focus on growing and changing. We will be learning about the human body in science focusing on the respiratory system. In PSHE we will be thinking about changes that happen to us as we grow and the impact of nutrition, exercise and different substances on our bodies. In D&T we will be learning about different food groups and developing our cookery skills through creating healthy, savoury dishes.

English and Maths

This half term we will be reading the book Wonder and producing a variety of writing outcomes based on the story. Later in the half term, the children will have the opportunity to meet someone who has Treacher Collins Syndrome, the same as the book’s main character. In maths, we will be developing our understanding of place value and number and revising calculation strategies through the mastery approach.

All Year 6 children have two P.E lessons each week. Please ensure that your child brings their P.E kit in every Monday. Please ensure that your child has a separate T-shirt from that of their school uniform. Children should wear black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, a white t-shirt (no football shirts) and trainers/plimsols. Please ensure that they always bring their kit with them as a kit is an essential part of a P.E lesson.

Home Learning Journals

Your child will have received a new home learning journal. These are to be looked after and kept for the entire year. Each week the children will be recording their spelling homework within these journals. It is expected that all children will practise their spellings at home and read on a regular basis. The journals will also give you, the parents, the opportunity to communicate your child’s teacher in the comments section.

Thank you for your continuing support.
