Year 5

Spring 1 -  2018

Welcome back!
We hope that you enjoyed the break.  We are really excited about the forthcoming half term and have lots of exciting learning planned for the children. It has been lovely to receive some home learning from the children linked to our new unit, ‘Water Worlds’

Unit of Learning – Water Worlds

This half term our unit of learning is, ‘Water Worlds’.  We will be learning about where water comes from and how it gets in to our homes.  Many of the children asked why developing countries don’t have clean running water in their homes, therefore we will be learning about the work of the charity, WaterAid.  Towards the end of the unit, we will be thinking about tips for saving water and what choices we would have if the world’s water supply ran out.  We are looking forward to reading, ‘Floodland’ by Marcus Sedgwick and using this to inspire some of our own story writing.

This half term, we will be focusing on measures.  The children will apply their knowledge of multiplication and division to learning about decimals and converting units.  It is important that the children practise their times tables at home, to help them with their learning in school.

Home Learning

We believe reading at home is an important way of supporting your child with their learning at school.  We recommend that children read every evening for about twenty minutes.  Please also ensure that your child brings their book bag to school every day, so they are able to take a range of books home at their level and so teachers are able to comment and provide suggestions to help you too.  Spellings and times tables will be sent home each week with plenty of space for children to practise.

Uniform and P.E. kit

Children will be doing P.E. twice a week as part of their school learning.  We would prefer they bring their kit to school on a Monday and take it home on a Friday.  For P.E. children should wear black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, white t-shirt and trainers/plimsolls.

Please see the class teacher if you would like to help out with activities happening in school.  Our reading volunteers provide a fantastic opportunity for many of our children to enjoy extra one to one reading.  This makes a big difference to the children’s progress and self-confidence.

Many thanks for your support,

Amy Griffin, Callum Dean, Nichola Daley and Aaron Jelley
